The Ocean initiatives, mission accomplished

As part of the partnership between UNESCO and the IMOCA Class, 25 skippers took scientific instruments on board at the start of the Vendée Globe. The last instrument, an Argos Marget II beacon, was deployed by Clarisse Crémer just after the equator, 3 days ago.

The initiative is part of the Ocean Decade (2021-2030), led by the United Nations. Its objective is to advance oceanographic research and improve weather forecasting by collecting data from all the world's oceans, particularly in little-frequented areas such as the seas of the Big South. The latter are extremely valuable.

These scientific instruments are supplied by a number of institutes operating in this domain, stakeholders of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). Eight types of instruments were used in this Vendée Globe: Argo floats, drifting buoys, Argos beacons, weather stations, TSG Gaillard, Calitoo photometer, OceanPack and planktoscope.

The 25 skippers have accomplished their mission and everyone who shares the outlook and understanding of our need to care for the oceans gives thanks to the skippers and the Vendée Globe.

From 2028, the organisation will make it compulsory for all competitors to participate in actions in favour of oceanographic research.
