Soudée had to deal with more than 30 knots of winds averaging 30 and gusts of 60 knots. These are particularly difficult conditions especially as he is faced with several technical problems. He has ibeen suffering from a halyard problem since yesterday. Then last night, around 2:30 am he suffered damage to his headsail. He secured his J2 on the forestay. This is one of the most important sails which stays fixed to the main forestay, a key part of the boat's rigging. To fix these problems Soudée knows that he will have to climb the mast and so to do this he must find himself some easier conditions. He could take shelter near the nearest islands, the Kerguelens, some 220 miles from his current position.
