Skipper Gilou, winner of the Virtual Vendée Globe

This Saturday at 0243 UTC, Skipper Gilou crossed the finish line of the Virtual Vendée Globe in first position. After 75 days, 14 hours and 41 minutes of racing, Gilles Boulard succeeds Jean-Claude "tigrou26120" Goudon, winner of the 2020 edition. The virtual race, which was contested on the Virtual Regatta Offshore platform, brought together more than 820,000 players, 27% of whom were international.

With 826,378 players registered, the results of the Virtual Vendée Globe are very positive. The majority of players are domiciled in France but the share of international participation is increasing. "In 2020, there were 80% French players, compared to 73% this time, which demonstrates the growing interest in the game abroad," says Thomas Gauthier, deputy general manager of Virtual Regatta, who adds that "the consumables, recently introduced in the game, were widely used by players".

During this edition, Switzerland was the second most represented country with 5% of players, ahead of Italy with 3% of players. Alain Leboeuf, President of the Vendée Globe and the Vendée Department, is delighted with this enthusiasm:

Seeing hundreds of thousands of players from all over the world take part in the virtual Vendée Globe is evidence of the growing popularity of our race, which transcends borders and unites enthusiasts. This success confirms that the Vendée Globe, whether real or virtual, is a unique experience, capable of inspiring and bringing people together. Congratulations to the big virtual winner!

President of the Vendée Globe et the Departement de la Vendée

This year, more than 50 private races were organised by partner companies of the event, and by other organisations, compared to 27 during the previous edition. "The private races attracted even more players than four years ago, with a record of 15,000 registered for the Beneteau race, which brought together the largest number of players", adds Gauthier.

In schools across France some 8,000 classes took part in the Virtual Vendée Globe, almost double the number seen in the 2020 edition.
